Chapter 6
“I don’t know what ye’re playing at with that foreign lass, but it ends now. Ye’ll marry Rhona,” Fergus growled.
It was the next morning, and Aleck stood in the center of his study. He’d tried to attend to his work, but Sara and the revelation of who she was consumed his thoughts. He knew the right thing to do was to send her back, she didn’t belong in this time—but his heart didn’t want to listen.
When he’d left her in her chamber this morning, their future was still uncertain. He’d simply kissed her and told her he had matters to attend to, when he really just needed to think.
Now, Aleck straightened, glaring at Fergus.
“I willnae marry Rhona,” Aleck hissed. The thought of bedding anyone other than his Sara filled him with disgust.
“Ye may be laird, but the nobles of the clan respect my opinion. And they all agree, ye need tae—”
“I know what I need tae do,” Aleck returned. “I’ll decide who I marry. If the nobles have concerns, they can bring them tae me. I’ll not have ye speak ill of Sara again. She’s the one I love. The one I wish tae marry.”
It felt good to say the words aloud, it was what he realized over the past few weeks. But she doesn’t belong in your time, a phantom voice whispered in his mind.
He pushed away the thought as Fergus glowered at him.
“I’ll not have ye marry a foreign bride. Our clan—“
“I’ll decide what’s best for our clan,” Aleck snapped. “And if I choose tae wed a foreign lass who makes me happy, that’ll be my choice.”
Though Fergus still glowered at him, there was a hint of respect in his eyes. Aleck turned away from Fergus, his chest tightening.
“But there’s no need tae fret,” he forced himself to say. “She doesnae belong here; I’ll be returning her tae her home.”
He swallowed against the pain that filled him at his words, meeting his uncle’s eyes. But instead of triumph, a look of empathy filled Fergus’s expression.
“'Twas true that I married my wife for duty,” Fergus said gruffly, after a long pause. “She was a good lass and I cared for her. But—there was another lass. She—she was a weaver who worked in the castle. I’d known her since I was a lad. I came tae care for her though I knew she wasn’t suitable for a bride. I believe she cared for me as well, but we never spoke of it. At times I wonder how things would have been if we’d wed.”
Fergus’s eyes went distant for a moment before he returned his focus to Aleck.
“I—I still think ’tis best tae marry an ally of the clan. But . . . if the lass truly makes ye happy, perhaps ye should tell her how ye feel.”
Aleck stared at Fergus in surprise. He’d never seen this side of him, never seen him express any regret.
Fergus flushed, a rare look of vulnerability crossing his face, before he turned and left the study.
